Linguistic Traditions of the Upper Napo

Abstract

Evidence from historical and archaeological research suggests that the Napo River was a route of constant movement of pre-Hispanic peoples, as well as a site of language and dialect fusion and transformation among the inhabitants of the area. The author contributes to the discussion of the evolution and expansion of the Quechua language, particularly toward groups and nations in present-day Ecuador. Previous conclusions and sources concerning the history of Quechua expansion in the Napo area are reviewed, leading to the conclusion that “Quechuaization” did not occur there until the colonial period.
