The Bilingual Teacher Training Program of the Peruvian Amazon

This article discusses the Bilingual Teacher Training Program of the Loreto Higher Pedagogical Institute in Iquitos, supported by AIDESEP (Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Amazon), an Indigenous organization made up of 22 regional federations. The program is aimed at training basic education teachers. Currently, the students belong to seven different ethnic groups, and students from other groups will gradually be incorporated. The program prioritizes the intercultural dimension over the bilingual dimension. For this reason, particular importance is given to teacher training and research addressing the cultural traditions of the ethnic groups involved.
