Abstract

The Intercultural Bilingual Education Program of San Marcos University in Ayacucho has gone through several stages since its establishment in 1966. Designed for Quechua communities, it had to address Indigenous people’s own doubts about the possibility of using both languages (Quechua and Spanish) instrumentally in the educational process. Although teachers’ support for the intercultural bilingual approach has been achieved, the program has been hindered by the presence of Shining Path terrorists in the region.
