Abstract

This article is based on a study of the Shipibo-Konibo, an Indigenous people located in the Department of Ucayali in eastern Peru. Using psychological theory and methods, the author provides comparative descriptive material on ethnic identity. This identity is presented and measured according to what psychologists call “self-concept.” The author studied three groups: Shipibo students living in their villages, Shipibo students living in the mestizo city of Pucallpa, and mestizo students in the same city.
