Conocimiento y Uso de Anticonceptivos Herbales en una Comunidad Shipibo

Una encuesta de salud hecha en 1964 en una comunidad shipibo, reveló el conocimiento y uso de preparaciones herbales a las que se atribuyen propiedades anticonceptivas. Una siguiente encuesta, en 1969, documentó el conocimiento, uso y efectividad de dichas preparaciones; sin embargo se notó que la comunidad tenía la fecundidad más alta de cualquier agrupación humana. Así, a pesar del uso de los anticonceptivos herbales, la fecundidad de las mujeres que lo habían usado y las que no, no brindó mayor apoyo a la hipótesis de la eficacia de dichos anticonceptivos. Como explicación al origen de tal teoría, se postula una correlación previa existente en la comunidad estudiada entre el período post-partum y la práctica de abstinencia sexual asociada con el uso de este tipo de anticonceptivos.
