State-Building and Science in the Amazon: The Putumayo Demarcation Commission (1928–1930)

Until the first half of the twentieth century, the Amazon, long considered a terra incognita, remained a difficult space to explore and demarcate. Endowed with immense natural resources, and due to the problems it posed in terms of sovereignty and economic development, its borderlands became the focal point of tensions among neighboring states. Peruvian historiography generally considers the “modern” borders of Peru to be those established under President Augusto B. Leguía (1908–1912 and 1919–1930). However, to date, researchers have largely neglected the history of the process of delineating the border along the Amazonian margins of Peruvian territory. By studying the reports of the Peruvian-Colombian Joint Commission tasked with demarcating the border in the Putumayo following the ratification of the Salomón-Lozano Treaty (1928)...
