Cultural Changes among Displaced Asháninka

Abstract

In this study, the author reflects on changes in the identity of the Asháninka ethnic group based on the meticulous collection and transcription of Asháninka songs performed by Indigenous people who, at one point, were involuntarily subjected to the dynamics of the terrorist group Shining Path. The study examines the group’s contact with members of Shining Path, who generally came from the Peruvian highlands, as well as the penetration of rhythms from diverse origins, which has led to musical syncretism and its corresponding influence on Asháninka group identity.
