Traditionally, our civilization has viewed the rainforest with a mixture of fear and awe, characteristic of a people forced to cope with an unfamiliar environment. Perhaps this perspective originated in the experiences of the first Spanish expeditions that crossed the Peruvian Andes toward the “Land of Cinnamon,” where they sought riches but encountered death and disaster. The Portuguese seem to have had a rather different experience with the tropical forest, perhaps because of the expectations they had of it.
