Focus Displacement and Media Silencing in the Murders of Journalists in the Peruvian Amazon

In the aftermath of the most critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Peruvian Amazon has experienced a marked intensification of violence associated with illegal economies—indiscriminate forest logging, illegal gold mining, and drug trafficking—framed within weak state presence and structural impunity. The year 2025 marked a turning point for Peruvian journalism: after nearly a decade without communicator homicides, four murders were recorded, two in Amazonian regions (Loreto and Ucayali).
This research examines the cases of Raúl Celis López and Mitzar Castillejos Tenazoa through media framing theory, qualitatively comparing national coverage with that of regional Amazonian media outlets. It identifies an initial displacement toward urban insecurity and police chronicle frames that systematically omitted the professional motive and associated territorial conflicts.
In contrast, local Amazonian media sustained a more persistent and contextualized narrative, incorporating collective memory, social protest, and institutional pressure that highlighted the investigative and socio-environmental dimensions of the victims. The results confirm dynamics of symbolic silencing countered by territorial persistence.
