A Review of the Concept of Cholo in the Peruvian Amazon

This paper is the result of the author’s reflection on the arguments put forward by Michael Chibnik and Anthony Stocks concerning the existence or otherwise of a new social group in the Amazon: the Cholo. The analysis focuses mainly on three points: a) the development of the socioeconomic conditions that give rise to processes of acculturation within Peruvian Indigenous society as a fundamental element in the formation of a new social type; b) the particularities of the development of capitalism in the Amazon and its impacts on the population; and c) a reflection on levels of identity among the Cocamilla of the Lower Huallaga.
