Abstract

The article deals with the songs used by traditional healers in the Peruvian Amazon while curing patients through the ingestion of the hallucinogenic brew ayahuasca. Following a brief introduction to the general theme of traditional medicine in the region, we analyze an isolated song from the repertoire of Shipibo traditional healer Don Roberto, examining both the melody and the lyrics. We compare it with two songs from other traditional healers. From there, we develop a model for the analysis of medicinal chants in the context of ayahuasca, concluding the article with a look at possibilities for further research.
