Abstract

This text develops some hypotheses on the mode of existence of spirits in the discourse and shamanic practices of indigenous Amazonia. The focus of analysis is a narrative given by Davi Kopenawa, a Yanomami thinker and political leader, to anthropologist Bruce Albert. The general argument of the article is that the concept of "spirit" refers, in the Amazonian case, less to an extensive class of supernatural "beings" than to an intensive virtual multiplicity where the human and the non-human are related by disjunctive synthesis.
