Development Policies in the Amazon, Cultural IdentityAbstract
The author believes that, in order to plan any kind of development in the Amazon, certain basic approaches must be adopted: an analysis of the situation and actions in the Amazon consistent with its conclusions, and respect for a cultural identity that has been forged over the centuries.
This article presents various policies that have been proposed and implemented regarding development in this region of Peru. Throughout the article, we can see how some of these policies have sought—and continue to seek—to view the Amazon holistically as part of the Peruvian nation, and how others have viewed the region as the country’s breadbasket and a territory that can be exploited at any given time.
