The presence and decline of the Tupi chiefdoms of the Upper Amazon basin in the 16th and 17th centuries

This study is a comparative reading of 16th- and 17th-century chronicles concerning the Omaguas, Cocamas, Mainas, and Cipitaconas in Peru. It glimpses large populations of thousands of people with a management of floodplain technology regarding agriculture, fishing, the hunting of aquatic animals, and abundant food with storage techniques. They were structured in chiefdoms that organized long-distance trade and warfare, and were governed by highly respected hereditary leaders. With the arrival of European epidemic and pandemic diseases and slavery, all of this began to collapse.
