En los trópicos húmedos de las Américas, donde la preservación de material vegetal reequilibrado es poco probable, la evidencia arqueológica del cultivo de mandioca consiste principalmente en artefactos asociados con el cultivo de mandioca en el registro etnográfico y que, por analogía, se usaron de manera similar en el pasado prehistórico. La validez de esta inferencia por analogía se examina en términos de platos de cerámica y dientes ralladores de piedra, dos de las evidencias más comúnmente citadas para el cultivo de mandioca.
