Sara Castro-Klarén studies how Mario Vargas Llosa's novel "El Hablador" (The Storyteller) criticizes the configuration of the indigenous person as a national subject in indigenist ethnographic writing. According to Castro-Klarén, this criticism is incoherent because it is based on a paradox in which the ideological burden of ethnography is questioned, while the novel, being an aesthetic product, is considered to be ideologically free writing.
