Impacto del COVID-19 en la salud de las gestantes de la Amazonía peruana: una revisión narrativa, 2020–2025

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on maternal and perinatal health in the Peruvian Amazon, a region historically vulnerable due to limitations in health infrastructure, geographical barriers, and insufficient state support. The aim of this study was to synthesise and critically analyse the available evidence on the health, psychological, and social impact of the pandemic on pregnant women in the Peruvian Amazon during the period 2020–2025. A narrative review of scientific literature was conducted across the medical, epidemiological, public health, and social sciences fields, complemented by institutional reports and local information. The findings indicate an increase in maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, with complications including pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, foetal distress, and maternal death. Indigenous women and pregnant adolescents represented the most vulnerable groups, facing suspension of antenatal care and elevated rates of adolescent pregnancy. At the psychosocial level, high levels of anxiety, depression, and social dysfunction were documented, exacerbated by domestic violence, food insecurity, and lockdown measures. In response to an insufficient state response, communities developed their own care strategies through community health workers, midwives, and programmes such as Mamás del Río.
