Based on a detailed description of a case involving a suicide attempt by an Awajún woman in the 1990s, this study conducts an analysis using an actor-oriented approach with a gender perspective. The purpose of this exercise is to clarify how the kinship and marriage system reproduces gender inequality, what limited spaces exist for women to negotiate the course of their lives, and what role violence against women plays within that system. Furthermore, this study reviews the relevant contemporary literature, in which an incomplete adoption of the gender perspective and a lack of conceptualization of the role of gender-based violence were observed in the various theories and hypotheses developed regarding the phenomenon of suicide among Awajún women.
