The “Great Boa”: Art and Cosmology of the Shipibo-Konibo

The importance of hallucinogens in the social functioning of the ethnic groups of the Amazon is already well known. This article examines the process of handicraft production, an exclusively female activity, and the designs used in the production of textiles and pottery. These designs are transmitted by the shaman, who, through the consumption of ayahuasca and synesthetic hallucination (acoustic-visual), perceives patterns revealed by ancient shamans (merayas), by certain powerful mythical beings, or through the aura of the person present during the sessions.
