This is an initial study of fertility and cultural change in a Shipibo community, conducted between 1964 and 1969, covering social, environmental, economic, cultural, and health-related aspects. Population growth in this community reaches 5% annually, a figure higher than that found by other researchers among other groups. The study analyzes the factors contributing to population growth and establishes, among other things, that reproduction begins at a very early age and continues until the end of the reproductive period. It observes that marriage is universal and that the community’s high reproductive capacity is reflected in the short interval between births, particularly due to the decline of polygyny, a practice disapproved of by missionaries.
