The negative effects on Indigenous peoples of the Amazon of externally controlled forces such as road construction, deforestation, and colonization have been denounced by researchers and the popular press, but insufficient attention has been paid to changes in gender relations and women’s status (social position) as a result of this process of cultural transformation. This process among the Asháninka of Peru’s humid tropical forest is examined over the past twenty years, with regard to relevant studies and regional political developments.
