Variability and change in personal names in an Amazonian indigenous society

This article presents a general discussion on the characteristics of personal names among the Ese Eja. Through an examination of the meaning of dreams, I describe the process by which the Ese Eja of a community on the Heath River, Madre de Dios, Peru, receive their personal names within the dynamic context of concepts of gender, reproduction, cosmology, and illness. I suggest that names present multidirectional messages and invoke narratives of social and ecological relations. The article concludes with a discussion on the dynamics of change in Ese Eja personal names, and their relationship to changes in social structure.
