Abstract

This essay reflects on the traditional subsistence systems that have characterized the ways of life of Indigenous peoples and their current situation. It examines the regional differentiation of these subsistence strategies and their dynamics within the tropical forest ecosystem. It also analyzes the ways in which these systems have been modified as a result of the increasing integration of Indigenous economies into national and international commercial circuits, as well as the processes of colonization and land dispossession. The essay also examines aspects of Indigenous legislation governing forms of association and patterns of land tenure in order to discuss their adequacy to the needs of Indigenous populations.
