Abstract

I will first attempt to provide a brief overview of the indigenous communities, emphasizing the regional context of the dominant, surrounding society. I will analyze how the frontiers of expansion—segments of the national community—confront tribal groups in the jungle. Second, I will attempt to present the specific situation of each of the ethnolinguistic groups. Finally, I will highlight those elements that I consider most relevant for a correct assessment of the situation and, at the same time, warn of the serious danger that, in my opinion, threatens an ethnically indigenous policy in the Peruvian Amazon.
