The Official Use of the Jungle in Republican Peru

The following article is an analysis of the official policy implemented during the occupation of the Amazon region throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, highlighting the origins, changes, and ramifications of this policy. The author argues that the various groups that support or oppose plans for the development of the Peruvian Amazon share an ahistorical interpretation of the region. Historical analyses focus more on economic transformation than on the continuity between the different stages or periods ranging from European migration for colonization (1820 to 1880), the rubber boom (1880 to 1920), and the period beginning in 1920, when the Amazon was viewed by Peruvian positivist intellectuals—influenced by Turner—as a convenient political “solution” to the social and economic problems of the Peruvian coast and highlands.
