Archaeological excavations in Chazuta, San Martín: A field report (First season, 2002)

Abstract

This document is a report on the First Season of archaeological research carried out in the town of Chazuta, department of San Martín, in the Peruvian Amazonian Andes. This work was conducted as a rescue operation with the objective of excavating and recovering a set of "funerary urns" found within the urban area of the town, which were at risk of being destroyed by local vandalism. The report focuses primarily on the description of ten buried pottery contexts, most of them with probable funerary purposes. This record highlights grids 1 and 8, which presented complex contexts whose documentation was extensive during the intervention. The results of the work provide a set of information that currently constitutes the first corpus of controlled archaeological data obtained from this Peruvian town.
