Poliginia e Fecundidade entre os Shipibo da Amazônia Peruana

Neste terceiro e último estudo, o autor se propõe a testar a hipótese específica de que a poliginia entre os Shipibo limita a fecundidade das mulheres tanto no nível individual quanto comunitário, por meio da abstinência pós-parto e do prolongamento dos intervalos entre cada nascimento, que são mais longos em uma união poligínica. Dessa maneira, os efeitos da modernização não estão necessariamente associados a uma fecundidade mais baixa, podendo, inclusive, aumentá-la na medida em que rompe com suas práticas culturais tradicionais. No entanto, o próprio autor adverte que não se devem generalizar os resultados de seu estudo para toda a etnia Shipibo ou para as populações indígenas em geral.
