Conhecimento e Uso de Anticoncepcionais à Base de Plantas em uma Comunidade Shipibo

Uma pesquisa de saúde realizada em 1964 em uma comunidade Shipibo revelou o conhecimento e o uso de preparações à base de plantas às quais são atribuídas propriedades anticoncepcionais. Uma pesquisa posterior, em 1969, documentou o conhecimento, o uso e a eficácia dessas preparações; no entanto, observou-se que a comunidade apresentava a maior taxa de fecundidade entre todas as populações humanas. Assim, apesar do uso de anticoncepcionais à base de plantas, a fecundidade das mulheres que os haviam utilizado e das que não os haviam utilizado não forneceu maior respaldo à hipótese da eficácia desses anticoncepcionais. Como explicação para a origem dessa teoria, postula-se uma correlação prévia existente na comunidade estudada entre o período pós-parto e a prática de abstinência sexual associada ao uso desse tipo de anticoncepcional.
