Knowledge and Use of Herbal Contraceptives in a Shipibo Community

A health survey conducted in 1964 in a Shipibo community revealed knowledge and use of herbal preparations attributed with contraceptive properties. A subsequent survey in 1969 documented the knowledge, use, and effectiveness of these preparations; however, it was noted that the community had the highest fertility rate of any human population. Thus, despite the use of herbal contraceptives, the fertility of women who had used them and those who had not provided little support for the hypothesis of the effectiveness of these contraceptives. As an explanation for the origin of this theory, the author proposes a prior correlation in the community studied between the postpartum period and the practice of sexual abstinence associated with the use of this type of contraceptive.
