Abstract

Drawing on travel accounts, letters, and diaries of the early missionaries, the author analyzes the different types of traditional settlements in the jungle. He describes the differences between the groups living in areas known as “várzea” and those located on “tierra firme.” He also provides a detailed description of the different models of the communal house, the mission town, the riverine farm, and the riverine village.
