Bilingual Education in Puno: What Has Been Done and What Remains to Be Done

Abstract

The origins of the Bilingual Education Program in Puno are linked to the educational reform implemented under the government of General Velasco. Since then, this experience has undergone modifications due to the opposing approaches of successive governments. Despite these challenges, the program, which is aimed at Quechua- and Aymara-speaking populations, most of whom are rural peasants, has achieved significant results and is currently in a consolidation phase. It is possible that the experience will soon be extended throughout the region.
