Aplicação do Modelo Biológico de Diversificação às Distribuições Culturais nas Terras Baixas Tropicais da América do Sul

Evidências provenientes de diversos campos sugerem que a Amazônia não permaneceu livre das drásticas flutuações climáticas experimentadas nas regiões temperadas e montanhosas do Hemisfério Ocidental durante o Pleistoceno e em períodos mais recentes. Zoólogos e botânicos utilizaram um modelo de ciclos climáticos e vegetacionais, no qual as florestas tropicais das terras baixas se reduzem periodicamente a enclaves isolados por savanas ou áreas de vegetação aberta, para explicar a abundância e a distribuição das espécies. Como os dois episódios mais recentes ocorreram após a chegada dos seres humanos ou de seus predecessores concorrentes, seus efeitos deveriam ser observáveis nas evidências antropológicas. O exame de dados linguísticos, etnográficos e arqueológicos revela padrões compatíveis com o modelo biogeográfico, abrindo uma nova via para a interpretação da história da adaptação humana às terras baixas tropicais antes do contato europeu.
