Abstract

Based on field research, the authors present a study of forms of family organization among the Candoshi-Murato people of the Upper Amazon (Loreto, Peru). The kinship system and the types of alliances resulting from marital exchanges are analyzed. Finally, some conclusions are suggested regarding the kinship system and the types of alliances that impart flexible and fluid characteristics to patterns of social organization and settlement patterns.
