La única distribución diferencial de los recursos naturales entre la varzea y la tierra firme en la cuenca del Amazonas no puede explicar las extensas redes comerciales a lo largo del río principal que operaban en el momento de la conquista española de la zona. El autor examina las vastas redes comerciales de artículos comerciales específicos como hachas de piedra, piedra verde, cobre y cerámica. El autor también analiza las referencias etnohistóricas a tribus especializadas en el comercio.
