Ileana Rodríguez takes a critical approach to the chronicle of Friar Gaspar de Carvajal about Francisco Orellana's 1541 journey down the Amazon River. The author highlights, in Carvajal, the intersection points of agrarian utopian narratives (the landscapes of the productive eye, understood in ethnographies and censuses) and war narratives (the landscapes of the predatory eye, understood in a kind of political economy), thereby underscoring the tropes of a tradition that today underlies postmodern narratives of colonization, both those representing hyperbolic human beings—from Rambos to Cyborgs—and those of research, development, and globalization.
