Abstract

In the sung poems that Candoshi women perform during masato-drinking festivals held to welcome visiting relatives, humorous references to the singer's modesty appear, sometimes reaching open self-deprecation. This article attempts to explain the recurrence of these references through the Candoshi perception of affective bonds and the unique possibility that only humor offers to express them.
