The Ecological Implications of Urarina Agriculture

This study presents an agricultural method for extensive land use, particularly suited to banana cultivation, which is practiced exclusively in the Peruvian Amazon region by the Urarina indigenous people. The agricultural system described here aims to avoid dependence on a long dry season, which is necessary to allow the crop to dry long enough before it is burned. The study also analyzes the commercial advantages and limitations of this unique form of “rotational” agriculture.
