Reinterpretation and Application of Chayanov’s Model: The Case of Non-Coca-Growing Settlers in the Peruvian Amazon

The fundamental purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the model proposed by the Russian economist Chayanov, concerning the influence of family size and the number of sons and daughters of productive age on the size of the cultivated area, operated within the family units of non-coca-growing settlers in the tropical region of the Upper Huallaga, in the Peruvian High Jungle. This occurred as a consequence, rather than merely a circumstantial factor, of the structural reproduction of non-capitalist social relations of reproduction and of the way Andean peasants have managed to reproduce their productive units in colonization areas.
