Consumo proteínico y desarrollo cultural en la cuenca amazónica

Resumen

Este artículo examina la propuesta de que la disponibilidad de proteínas animales limita el tamaño, la densidad y la permanencia de los asentamientos de las sociedades aborígenes de la cuenca del Amazonas. Los debates anteriores se han centrado principalmente en el potencial agrícola. Se presentan evidencias de etnografía y ecología que sugieren que la pesca y la caza son escasos, particularmente lejos de los principales ríos. Nueve sociedades relativamente no cultivadas tienen una ingesta per cápita relativamente baja pero probablemente adecuada de proteína animal. Se discuten los efectos que esta limitación puede tener en la cultura amazónica.
