Tradicionalmente, nuestra civilización ha mirado la selva con una mezcla de temor y asombro, característica de un pueblo forzado a· lidiar con un medio ambiente desconocido. Quizá este enfoque tenga su origen en las experiencias de las primeras expediciones españolas que atravesaron la cordillera peruana hacia la "Tierra de la Canela", donde buscaban riquezas, pero encontraron la muerte y el desastre. Los portugueses parecen haber tenido una experiencia bastante distinta con el bosque tropical, quizá por las expectativas que de él tenían.
