Neste ensaio, o autor reafirma sua posição sobre a teoria das proteínas, que estabelece uma relação entre a dieta e os padrões de assentamento das populações amazônicas. Ele descreve as perspectivas de seus críticos sobre seus conjuntos de dados e suas fontes de informação, demonstrando que eles não conseguiram refutar sua hipótese. O autor procura demonstrar que a disponibilidade de proteínas silvestres constitui um fator limitante para o tamanho, a permanência e a densidade dos assentamentos humanos nas bacias dos rios Amazonas e Orinoco.
